Apple has released updated drivers to a boat load of printers from several manufacturers. The drivers include support for printers from HP, Cannon, and Epson, and are targeted for OS X only.
- All Versions2.9out of 14 votes
Pros
- Apple HP Printer Drivers 3.1 - For OS X 10.7 or later. Download the latest versions of the best Mac apps at safe and trusted MacUpdate Download, install, or update Apple HP Printer Drivers for Mac from MacUpdate.
- Printer and scanner drivers for Mac If you have an older printer that doesn't support driverless technology, your Mac might automatically install the driver software needed to use that device. Many printers and scanners use driverless technologies such as AirPrint or IPP Everywhere, which don't require additional drivers on your Mac.
- If the appropriate driver is available from Apple, your Mac will install it automatically. This list is no longer updated. Many vendors of printers and scanners have adopted driverless technologies such as AirPrint, and they are no longer providing drivers for new devices.
- Apple has updated its Downloads section with a pair of driver updates aimed at users of the latest version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard. The two packages are freely available for download and contain.
This was the ONLY way I found to get my Photosmart printer to scan and have full print capabilities again.
Cons
None. It was a piece of cake.
Albeit none of this functionality appeared in the Apple Updates process.

Summary
Full functionality was returned using Yosemite after downloading and installing from this CNET site. Apple should incorporate these drivers into their App Updates site.
I was beginning to lose faith.

'It doesn't install. Almost to end, 'encountered error'
Pros
none for me
Cons
useless for me
Summary
Somehow Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and HP psc 750 printers are incompatible. Neither Apple nor HP cares enough to provide drivers that allow one to print & scan with this device and OS. A third party generic driver like gutenprint works for printing, but not for scanning. So a perfectly good printer/scanner has become half useless. I'm sorry to have 'upgraded' to Mountain Lion because of problems like this, and the fact that it hogs RAM slowing the iMac unnecessarily. Very disappointing.
Pros
Nothing for me
Cons
No longer prints PDFs. It's a bug I've seen after doing some research on my problem. I used the apple software update, and was upgraded from version 2.14 to this version 2.16.1, and immediately lost the ability to print PDFs. I'm running OS X 10.7.5, and print over a network at work. The printer spools endlessly, and I'm stuck.
Summary
I know bugs are selective, so maybe you'll be fine. But I'm now working to downgrade back to 2.14, not an easy task I'm finding!

Pros Cobra f speed driver specs.
Worked well after I restored my HP to version 2.0 from a backup.
Cons
I'd suggest passing on this update.
I have an HP 1500. Worked well until the download. I'm using 10.6.8 and all is well after I restored my HP to version 2.0 from a backup.

'On Mountain Lion this update causes printer crashes'
'On Mountain Lion this update causes printer crashes'
Pros
I've been very happy with earlier versions of these Printer Drivers
Cons
Printing to HP LaserJet 4100 Series from any application crashes after applying this update (at least on Mountain Lion).
If you have a TimeMachine backup from before the you applied the update, the easiest fix is to use it to replace the contents of /Library/Printers/hp/Frameworks/HPSmartPrint.framework with your most recent backup of that folder from before the update was applied.
Problem occurs with both the AppStore software update version and the full installer from Apple's website. Problem and solution have been verified on Mountain Lion installations on two machines.
I don't know if this affects other HP laser printers. I expect that it probably will.

Since upgrading to snow leopard my HPDJ6540 has been SLOW!! Not the actual printing but the staging, or transfer from computer to printer. We're talking 80 seconds to set up one page of plain text! Before upgrade this all happened within seconds.. I thought this latest driver upgrade would help but.. no..

I, too, had the last minute hang and not go anywhere, but I left it alone for several minutes while tending to my grandaughter, and found that it had finished in the interim. However - even though my printer/copier/scanner was listed, it still does not copy or scan. So for me, I will continue to use my Canon scanner. Very sloppy quality control testing, if any was done at all. HP has consistently let me down. Not sure I will purchase another product from them.

This exact scenario happened with my attempt at installing. I have four friends, one of whom used to work at an Apple Store--same issue. This is obviously not an isolated event as even a previous commenter added weight to this.
I got a PACE kext repeating dialog and a runaway process with fans a blazing. I not only had to force-quit the installer, but had to reboot as well to get rid of a continuing repeating loop of pop-up errors about an badly installed kext.
I gave it one more shot and rebooted into safe mode, logged into a freshly created admin account--same deal. Had to force-quit the installer--which didn't end the repetetive pop-ups.
Obviously this is a problematic update that needs fixing.
It still frankly amazes me, and don't get me wrong, I still drink the Apple Kool-Aid, but I've been amazed how easily the Windows updates go in general, considering they are on a huge installed base of 'machines of mystery' of an infinite variety of configurations not owned by Microsoft.
Apple owns, develops and maintains it's own installer base that includes a much smaller number of KNOWN machines (machines of no mystery)--and yet we are so often plagued with bad install issues like this. You'd think this would be the opposite experience in 'mac world.'
Owning a Mac is about simplicity in your computing life, not having to be a 'smart Mac person' who knows for example, not to use the automated 'Software Update' but rather to download a huge combo-update, boot into safe mode, repair permissions, install, re-repair permissions etc.
You can do much much better than this Steve Jobs. Take your eyes off your bottom line and live up to what Bill Gates said about you when he said you were 'doing good things..' There's nothing wrong with 'doing good things' after you've sold someone something too. We're moving into a more and more re-purposed world that tries to keep technology out of the landfill just a little longer.

Went to the trouble of installing this, and My HP 4100 series all in one, still will not scan under Snow Leopard. Nor will it work with all the short cuts (offensively offerred on the Apple website). I am not looking to figure out who to blame. Snow Leopard is a popular and well deployed system, the HP all-in-ones are also well sold and widely deployed. GET THIS FIXED!!

Following the release of Mac OS X 10.6.5, Apple is now making available printer driver updates for a variety of models in Software Update.
The update package installs the latest printer, fax and scanner drivers specific to the devices the user has installed. The driver update does not appear unless the 10.6.5 update has been applied.
For a system with an HP printer installed, Apple only delivers the updated drivers for HP devices, reducing the need for gigabytes of disk space to be consumed by irrelevant printer software.
Apple details the models supported in its latest driver update in a support document. The list includes printer software released as of November 3, 2010.
The update includes third party printer software for over fifteen brands of printers, in addition to general purpose CUPS and Gutenprint (formerly Gimp Print) drivers created by the open source community to support a variety of other, older or discontinued printers from over ten other vendors.
Apple acquired the code for CUPS in 2007, and continues to maintain the open source project for Mac OS X and other Unix and Unix-like operating systems including Linux and BSD.
Apple now maintains printer driver updates for Snow Leopard
One example print software package, for the HP Photosmart C7200 series, initially shipped with Snow Leopard as version 4.0, later updated by Apple to 4.0.2. The latest update brings the software for this printer to 4.2, the newest version HP offers.
HP's own website now directs users to obtain their software driver updates through Snow Leopard's Software Update, listing only a year old version of the company's drivers in a package that includes utility software and custom scanner software, and older versions for previous releases of Mac OS X.
Apple changed the printing architecture in Snow Leopard enough to require updated new printer drivers for existing devices, and announced that it would be updating user's printer drivers via Software Update at regular intervals instead of leaving users to hunt down their own driver updates.

Hp Printer Drivers For Mac
- The Apple support document claims one of my printer drivers has been updated..but it's not showing up in Software Update. Maybe later this evening?
AppleInsider is the first to carry this story so maybe they jumped the gun and Apple hasn't populated SU yet. - I had new HP printer drivers when I updated to 10.6.5 On Wednesday. However, I'm confused that Apple would want to be responsible for pushing printer drivers, but not be responsible for things like Flash and Java. I thought they were going more for a 'download the latest from the other's website'
I wish more Apps would update via Software Update, but I guess that is what the App store is for. - Quote:Originally Posted by hill60
No printer drivers here, there is a new iTunes.
The drivers are only present if you have the printer attached to your machine. Printer drivers in Snow Leopard download on-demand by default. - Quote:Originally Posted by Ferazel

They just deploy the printer drivers. They don't write them. Apple actually wrote Java for OS X. This may be available through the new App Store when Oracle starts releasing the OS X version. Flash is already semi-automatically installed through Safari with the recent change. - To get the latest HP Printer Drivers, version 2.5.2 for Mac OS X 10.6, dated November 4, 2010, just go to:

They are hardly the same don't you think. Optional software vs required device drivers? - I installed them.. but I'm hoping they work this time. I updated to HP 2.4.2 twice and both times, both my all in one printers just refused to work.
Fingers crossed, otherwise I'm reverting again. - Quote:Originally Posted by ouragan

I'm concerned that these will re-disable AirPrint. - I was able to print OK on my DeskJet 3425 after installing the 2.5.2 last November but yesterday, trying to print for the first time after installing 10.6.6, I got an error message about the black cartridge being faulty or imcompatible. I replaced the cartridge, but with the same result. Ditto with trying to connect my Macbook Pro (which also had been updated to 10.6.6) and print
